One of the things that we did on some old heavily used school PCs were run a diskcleanup and then defrag using a third party defragger. Since the drives were all heavily fragmented, what would have taken ages was resolved in a jiffy. The difference is noticeable and the systems will definitely run a while before they have to be upgraded.
